Office of Personnel Management

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Retirement Services processes benefits for Federal retirees, manages accounts for retirees, survivors, and qualified former spouses, and sends monthly annuity payments to beneficiaries. Retirement Services is responsible for the Government-wide administration of retirement benefits and services for Federal employees, retirees, and their families. These benefits and services offer employees the opportunity to plan for their retirement, to know that their retirement system is effectively managed, or assist survivors and family members to receive benefits to which they are entitled.

Applying for Federal civilian retirement

Retirement Services collaborates with Federal agency human resource and payroll offices to help prospective retirees learn about, plan, and apply for retirement. OPM processes and adjudicates retirement applications, delivering annuity payments under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). On average, OPM receives and adjudicates around 100,000 retirement applications annually.

Managing a Federal annuitant retirement account

OPM Retirement Services assists nearly 2.7 million annuitants in managing and making changes to their retirement accounts after retirement. Services Online, a self-service portal, allows annuitants to view annuity payment statements, annual notices, life insurance selections, and tax documents. Service Online enables retirees to change contact data, tax withholdings, direct deposits, financial allotments, and request ID replacement cards or retirement booklets. In FY23, Services Online had over 4.5 million user logins and over 7 million account changes.
